What Is a Trading Bot? A Complete A-to-Z Guide to Setting Up a Trading Bot for Beginners

After more than a year of using trading bots, I’ve realized that what interests many people most isn’t how much money a bot can make, but its ability to help me trade more systematically and with greater discipline.

In the past, I would constantly check charts, monitor price movements, and sometimes make decisions based on emotions. Since I started using a trading bot, things have become much simpler. The bot executes predefined rules automatically, helping reduce emotional entries and significantly cutting down the amount of time I spend in front of the screen.

In this article, I’ll share my real-world experience after more than a year of using trading bots—from how they work and why you might consider using one, to the costs involved and important considerations for beginners. If you’re interested in automated trading but don’t know where to start, I hope these experiences will give you a more realistic perspective before getting started.

What Is a Forex Trading Bot?

A Forex Trading Bot, also known as a Forex Robot or Expert Advisor (EA), is automated trading software programmed to execute buy and sell orders in the foreign exchange (Forex) market without direct human intervention. These bots operate based on predefined algorithms and trading strategies, helping investors automate the trading process.

Instead of sitting in front of a computer screen for 8 hours a day to monitor the market and look for buying or selling opportunities, you can essentially “delegate” the task to the bot. The bot can automatically perform actions such as opening and closing positions, managing risk, avoiding scheduled news events, or trading during predefined time windows.

You can run these bots on instruments such as Gold (XAUUSD), Silver, or currency pairs such as USDJPY and GBPUSD. The bots operate based on the algorithms and strategies configured by you or developed by the programmer.

Trading Bots Are Not Driven by Emotions

What I like most about using a trading bot is that it isn’t influenced by emotions! This is one of the main reasons many traders prefer using bots over manual trading.

When trading manually, it’s very easy to become emotional: when you’re winning, you become greedy and want to make more; when you’re losing, frustration can lead to holding losing positions too long, eventually resulting in a blown account. With a trading bot, as long as the predefined rules and parameters are followed, it simply executes the strategy as programmed.

That’s the theory. However, there are also many cases where traders use a bot but constantly interfere with its operation. From my personal perspective, if you’ve chosen to use a trading bot, let the bot do its job according to the strategy. If you prefer making decisions on every trade yourself, manual trading may be more suitable.

Note: Before putting a trading robot into live operation, you should test its performance by installing it on a testing or demo account. Once everything is operating stably and as expected, you can then consider switching to a live trading account.

How to Use a Forex Trading Bot?

To use a Forex Trading Bot effectively, you should look for reputable providers or professional developers who can create an Expert Advisor (EA) tailored to your trading strategy. Alternatively, if you have knowledge of programming and trading, you can also develop your own EA to have full control over how the bot operates.

Currently, Uyên is collecting several trading bots with stable performance and sharing them for free within the community. If you’re interested and want to give them a try, join the community now to receive the bots completely free of charge.

Using a VPS to Run a Trading Bot

When trading Forex on MT4/MT5 or using any automated trading software, a VPS (Virtual Private Server) is an essential tool.

Why Do You Need a VPS?

After setting up a trading bot, if you want it to operate continuously 24/7 without interruptions caused by internet connection loss, power outages, or shutting down your computer, you need a VPS.

Simply put, a VPS is a virtual computer that operates independently, similar to a physical computer but hosted on a cloud-based infrastructure.

With a VPS, your trading bot can continue running consistently even when your personal computer is turned off. This is particularly important for automated trading strategies, where even a slight execution delay can affect trading performance.

How Does a VPS Work?

A VPS is a type of virtual server that shares resources from a physical server while still having dedicated RAM, CPU, and storage resources. This helps provide stable performance, flexibility, and convenience, allowing your trading bot to operate smoothly without being affected by external factors.

Where Can You Rent a VPS? How Much Does It Cost?

Currently, I provide VPS services for those who want to use them to run trading bots at a reasonable cost. If you need one, feel free to contact me for support.

How to Install a Trading Bot

Step 1: Log in to the VPS

On your computer, open Remote Desktop Connection and enter your VPS credentials to log in.

If you have trouble connecting, simply change the VPS password and try logging in again.

Step 2: Download and Install MT4/MT5

After logging into your VPS, use Google to download MT4 or MT5.

  • If your bot runs on MT4, download MT4.
  • If your bot runs on MT5, download MT5.

After downloading, extract the file and proceed with the installation.

Step 3: Create an Exness or Vantage Account and Log in to MT4/MT5

Log in to your Exness or Vantage account on your phone or computer, then create a live trading account.

Deposit funds into your trading account, then return to the MT4/MT5 interface on your computer to log in.

Step 4: Install the Trading Bot

Below, the Admin will use MT4 as an example so you can install the bot yourself:

  • Open MT4/MT5 and go to File → Open Data Folder.

  • Next, select MQL5 → Experts.

  • Copy the shared bot file into the Experts folder.

  • Return to MT5, go to Expert Advisors, and click Refresh to make the bot appear in the list.

Step 5: Activate the Bot on the Trading Chart

  • Open the chart of the trading pair you want to trade, for example XAU/USD.
  • Drag the bot onto the chart.
  • Select the Common tab, check Allow live trading, then click OK.

  • Go to Inputs and load the corresponding bot setup file for the trading pair.

  • Click OK to confirm.
  • Next, click the ALGO TRADING button to activate the bot. When the icon is green, the bot is running; when it is red, the bot is stopped.

  • In the upper-right corner, if you see a blue illuminated hat icon, the bot is running successfully.

That’s it! In just a few steps, you can install the Trading Bot yourself. From there, you simply let the bot execute trades automatically.

Conclusion

Combining a Trading Bot with a VPS is a smart solution for improving trading efficiency, especially for those who want to optimize their time and eliminate emotional factors from the investment process. The bot automatically executes buy and sell orders according to the predefined strategy, while the VPS ensures that the bot operates continuously and reliably 24/7—without worrying about power outages, computer shutdowns, or Internet connection interruptions.

Hopefully, through the information shared in this article, you now have a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of automated trading with bots, as well as the important role of a VPS in ensuring the smooth operation of the entire system.
