Month 0: The Starting Line Nobody Talks About

Six months ago, my monthly online income was exactly zero.

Not “almost zero.” Not “$50 here and there.” Zero. I had a laptop, a phone, an internet connection, and a growing suspicion that the way most people talk about making money online was fundamentally dishonest.

Every YouTube video promised $10K/month in 30 days. Every course was “the last one you’ll ever need.” Every screenshot showed green numbers with no context, no timeline, no mention of the months of nothing that came before.

I decided to do something different. I decided to document everything — the failures, the $3 commission checks, the weeks where I questioned whether any of this was real — and share it without the filter.

This is that story.

The Three Income Streams I Chose (And Why)

Before spending a single dollar, I spent two weeks researching. Not watching motivational content. Researching — reading broker documentation, studying commission structures, testing free tools, running numbers on a spreadsheet.

I narrowed my focus to three income streams that shared one critical characteristic: they compound over time rather than reset to zero each month.

Stream 1: Trading Bot Automation Instead of trading manually (and emotionally), I would use algorithmic systems — Grid bots for crypto, Expert Advisors for forex — that execute strategies 24/7 without human intervention.

Stream 2: Broker Affiliate / IB (Introducing Broker) Every time someone I referred to a trading platform made a trade, I would earn a small commission. Not once — every single time they trade, for as long as they remain active. Lifetime commissions.

Stream 3: Content-Driven Traffic Blog posts, short-form video, educational content — all designed to attract people who were searching for the same answers I had been searching for. The content would be the engine that powered everything else.

The logic was simple. Stream 1 generates trading income. Stream 2 generates passive referral income. Stream 3 feeds both by bringing in new people every day. All three reinforce each other.

Month 1: $47 and a Lot of Confusion

What I Actually Did

Week 1 — Account Setup I opened accounts on three platforms. For crypto bots, I started with Binance — the largest exchange by volume, with built-in Grid and DCA bot functionality. For forex automation, I chose Exness — low spreads, MT4/MT5 support, and one of the most transparent IB programs in the industry.

Total time: about 2 hours including KYC verification.

Week 2 — First Bot Deployment I deposited $200 into Binance and set up a Grid Bot on BTC/USDT. I had no idea what I was doing. I set the grid range too narrow, used too many grid lines for my capital, and watched the bot make 12 trades in the first day — each one earning approximately $0.08.

I also installed MT4 on a basic VPS ($7/month) and loaded a free EA I found on a forex forum. It opened one trade in three days and closed it for a $1.40 profit. I felt nothing.

Week 3–4 — First Content I published my first blog post: a straightforward guide on how Grid bots work. It took me six hours to write. It got 23 views in the first week. I also registered for IB affiliate programs on Exness and Vantage, and created tracking links.

Month 1 Results

  • Bot trading profit: $14
  • IB affiliate commissions: $0
  • Blog traffic: 47 visitors total
  • Content published: 3 posts
  • Total income: $14
  • Hours invested: ~60

Hourly rate: approximately $0.23. I could have made more collecting aluminum cans.

Month 2: $186 and the First Sign of Life

What Changed

I realized my Grid bot range was wrong. BTC was trending upward, and my grid was set for sideways movement. I widened the range, reduced the number of grids, and restarted. The difference was immediate — fewer trades, but each one was more profitable.

On the forex side, I abandoned the free EA (its drawdown hit 18% in week two) and spent $49 on an EA with a verified myfxbook track record of 14 months. I backtested it on MT4’s Strategy Tester for three years of historical data before putting it on my live account. The results were modest but consistent.

I also learned something crucial about content: nobody wants to read a textbook. My first three posts were informational — “What is a Grid Bot,” “How Forex Spreads Work,” and so on. They performed poorly. My fourth post was titled “I Lost $38 in My First Week of Bot Trading — Here’s What Went Wrong.” It got more traffic than the other three combined.

People don’t search for definitions. They search for experiences.

Month 2 Results

  • Bot trading profit: $67
  • IB affiliate commissions: $23 (3 referrals, first trades)
  • Blog traffic: 340 visitors
  • Content published: 6 posts
  • Total income: $90
  • Cumulative: $104

The IB number was the one that excited me most. $23 is nothing in absolute terms. But those three referrals would continue generating commissions every month, without any additional work from me.

Month 3: $612 and the Mindset Shift

The Turning Point

Month 3 was when the math started to click.

My blog post about my trading bot losses had been indexed by Google and was ranking on page 2 for “grid bot mistakes.” Organic traffic increased from 340 to 1,100 visitors. I published a detailed comparison post — Exness vs. Vantage for EA trading — that started generating consistent IB signups.

I also added Bybit to my crypto setup. Their DCA bot implementation was cleaner than what I’d been using, and the interface was more approachable for the beginners I was writing content for. This mattered because I was now recommending platforms in my content — recommending tools I didn’t personally use would have been dishonest, and dishonesty eventually destroys trust.

On the EA side, I moved from one forex EA to three, running on separate currency pairs to diversify risk. One scalper on EUR/USD, one trend follower on XAU/USD (gold), and one mean-reversion system on GBP/JPY. Total forex capital at this point: $800.

The Mindset Shift

Here’s what changed in my thinking: I stopped measuring daily. In month 1, I checked my bot dashboard every two hours. By month 3, I checked twice a day — morning and evening. The systems were either working or they weren’t. Staring at them didn’t make them work better.

I redirected all that monitoring energy into content creation. One blog post per week. Two short-form videos. The content took time to produce but — unlike a single trade — each piece continued working indefinitely after publication.

Month 3 Results

  • Bot trading profit: $189
  • IB affiliate commissions: $142 (14 active referrals)
  • Blog traffic: 1,100 visitors
  • Content published: 5 posts + 8 videos
  • Total income: $331
  • Cumulative: $435

Month 4: $1,340 and the Power of Compounding Referrals

What Scaled

Two things happened in month 4 that changed the trajectory.

First, my comparison posts started ranking. “Best Forex Broker for EA Trading” hit page 1 on Google. “Binance vs Bybit for Trading Bots” reached position 4. These weren’t viral hits — they were steady, consistent traffic sources bringing in 30–50 visitors per day, many of whom were actively looking for a broker to sign up with.

Second, my existing IB referrals were trading more. The three people who signed up in month 2 had become experienced enough to increase their position sizes. Their trading volume grew — and so did my commissions, without me doing anything new.

This is the part of IB income that’s hard to appreciate until you experience it. The commission from a single referral grows over time as that person becomes more active. And unlike a product sale (one transaction, one payment), IB commissions are recurring and cumulative.

I also started receiving messages from readers asking for help setting up their own bots. Instead of giving free one-on-one consultations (unsustainable), I wrote detailed tutorial posts that answered every common question. These tutorials became some of my highest-converting content.

Month 4 Results

  • Bot trading profit: $312
  • IB affiliate commissions: $487 (31 active referrals)
  • Blog traffic: 2,800 visitors
  • Content published: 5 posts + 10 videos
  • Total income: $799
  • Cumulative: $1,234

Month 5: $2,870 and the System Running Itself

The Flywheel Effect

By month 5, I could feel the flywheel turning on its own.

New content attracted new readers. Some readers signed up for brokers through my links. Some of those new traders asked questions, which gave me ideas for new content. That new content attracted more readers. The cycle fed itself.

My bot portfolio had also matured. I was running five bots across crypto and forex with a combined capital of $2,400. Monthly bot income was becoming meaningful — not because any single bot was spectacular, but because five modest performers running simultaneously produced reliable aggregate returns.

I added BingX to my ecosystem specifically for copy trading content. Their social trading interface was strong, and it gave me material for a new content category: “how to evaluate traders to copy” — a topic with high search volume and almost no quality content in English.

I also made a decision that felt counterintuitive at the time: I started publishing content about my losses. A post about my worst drawdown week, a video about an EA that failed after performing well for two months, an honest breakdown of a Grid bot that got stuck in a trend. Every single one of these “failure” posts outperformed my “success” posts in both traffic and conversions.

The lesson was clear. The internet has enough people showing screenshots of green numbers. What people actually trust — and what actually drives them to take action — is someone showing the full picture.

Month 5 Results

  • Bot trading profit: $583
  • IB affiliate commissions: $1,240 (58 active referrals)
  • Content/consulting income: $180
  • Blog traffic: 5,400 visitors
  • Content published: 6 posts + 12 videos
  • Total income: $2,003
  • Cumulative: $3,237

Month 6: $4,847 and What I Learned

The Numbers

By the end of month 6, my income sources looked like this:

Income Stream Month 6 % of Total
IB Affiliate Commissions $2,640 54%
Bot Trading Profits $1,187 25%
Content / Tutorials $620 13%
Copy Trade Commissions $400 8%
Total $4,847 100%

Cumulative 6-month income: $8,084

The split tells the real story. More than half of my income came from IB commissions — an income stream that requires zero additional capital, carries no market risk, and grows automatically as referrals increase their trading activity.

Bot trading was the second largest. But importantly, it was also the riskiest. There were weeks where bots lost money. There were individual EAs that had to be shut down. The bot income line is not a smooth upward curve — it’s volatile, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

What Actually Mattered (And What Didn’t)

Looking back across six months, here’s what I’d tell my month-0 self:

The broker you choose matters more than the strategy you run. Spread differences of 0.5 pips seem negligible until you realize a scalping EA makes 50 trades a day. Over a month, that difference is hundreds of dollars. I wish I’d started with a Raw Spread account on Exness from day one instead of using a Standard account for the first six weeks.

Content is the highest-ROI activity in the entire system. A blog post takes 4–6 hours to write. A good one generates traffic for years. A single well-ranking comparison post has generated more IB referrals than months of direct outreach ever could.

IB affiliate income is the most underrated income stream in online finance. It’s not sexy. It doesn’t make for exciting TikTok videos. But it compounds relentlessly. My month-2 referrals are now generating more commission per month than they did in their first month — because they’re trading more, with larger positions.

Transparency is a competitive advantage, not a vulnerability. Every time I published a loss or a mistake, engagement went up. Trust went up. Conversions went up. The online finance space is so saturated with fake screenshots that simply being honest has become a differentiator.

Consistency beats intensity. I never worked 16-hour days on this. I worked 2–3 focused hours per day, every day, for six months. The compounding happened because I didn’t stop — not because I sprinted.

The Realistic Timeline Nobody Shows You

Here’s the honest growth curve:

Month Monthly Income Cumulative Active IB Referrals
Month 1 $14 $14 0
Month 2 $90 $104 3
Month 3 $331 $435 14
Month 4 $799 $1,234 31
Month 5 $2,003 $3,237 58
Month 6 $4,847 $8,084 89

The first two months were brutal in terms of dollars-per-hour. If you’re starting this journey expecting meaningful income in week 3, you will quit. The system needs time to build momentum — content needs to get indexed, referrals need to start trading, bots need to compound.

The hockey stick doesn’t appear until month 3–4. And it only appears if you keep publishing, keep testing, and keep showing up during the months when the numbers are embarrassingly small.

What I’d Do Differently If I Started Over Tomorrow

Start with IB affiliate first, not trading. Trading requires capital and carries risk. IB affiliate requires only content and time. I’d build the referral engine first, use the commission income to fund my trading accounts, and eliminate the need for personal capital entirely.

Invest in a VPS from day one. I lost two weeks of potential EA profits because I was running MT4 on my laptop and closing it every night. A $10/month VPS would have paid for itself within the first week.

Write comparison content before educational content. “Exness vs XM” converts better than “What is Forex” because people searching for comparisons are closer to making a decision. Educational content builds traffic over time, but comparison content builds revenue immediately.

Focus on two platforms maximum at the start. I spread myself across too many brokers in month 2. It diluted my attention and made my content less specific. I’d pick one crypto platform and one forex broker, go deep on both, and expand later.

Where I’m Going Next

Month 6 hit $4,847. The target is $10K/month by month 12.

The roadmap is straightforward: more content (especially video), deeper into SEO for broker comparison keywords, expanding to additional forex brokers for portfolio diversification, and building out a sub-IB network — training other people to become affiliates under my referral tree.

The math is on my side. IB commissions compound naturally as more referrals join and trade more actively. Content accumulates and compounds in search rankings. Bot portfolios grow as profits are reinvested.

None of this is passive in the way internet marketers use that word. It requires consistent effort. But the ratio of effort to output improves dramatically over time. Month 1 required 60 hours for $14. Month 6 required roughly the same hours for $4,847. Same input, wildly different output — because the system had been building underneath.

Final Thoughts

If you’re reading this from month 0, I want you to know something: the people making real money online aren’t smarter than you. They just started before you and didn’t quit during the months when nothing seemed to be working.

The tools are available to everyone. Broker IB programs are free to join. Trading bots can be set up in an afternoon. A blog can be launched in an hour. The barrier isn’t access — it’s patience.

Start. Stay consistent. Document everything. Let the system compound.

Six months from now, you’ll be glad you began today.

Financial markets carry risk. The income figures in this post reflect my personal experience and are not guaranteed. Past performance does not indicate future results. Always trade with capital you can afford to lose.
